2009 Philadelphia Open Studio Tours

Philadelphia, PA – This October, The Center for Emerging Visual Artists™ is pleased to bring you the 10^th Annual Philadelphia Open Studio Tours. Join over 300 professional visual artists, local businesses, arts organizations and galleries to celebrate 10 years of studio art!  Artists and event partners in every neighborhood from Chestnut Hill to South Philly will open their doors free to public in the largest event of its kind in Philadelphia.

 

The Open Studio Tours not only exposes the work of emerging and established studio artists to the public, but this year our new Community Partners initiative has helped forge important connections between the artist community, local businesses, galleries, culture-seekers of all varieties, and longtime arts organizations. These community partners, listed in full on the event website: philaopenstudios.org, will be the primary distribution points for all POST literature and information.

 

The 10^th Anniversary festivities are just around the corner! Artist Studios EAST of Broad Street
The weekend of October 3-4, 2009, noon-6pm

Visit artists working in South Philly, Bella Vista, Queen Village, South Street, Center City, Old City, Northern Liberties, Kensington, Fishtown, and Port Richmond

Artist Studios West of Broad Street
The weekend of October 10-11, 2009, noon-6pm
All tours are self-guided and free
Visit artists working in Germantown, Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill, East Falls, Manayunk, Roxborough, West Philly,  North Philly, Fairmount, Center City, and Graduate Hospital 

POST Guided Tour
Sunday October 4, 1 – 4 pm
Meet at 1521 Locust Street
Want to visit artist studios, but not sure where to start? Join the Friends of CFEVA Guided Tour, and enjoy select artist studios with transportation and refreshments provided. Philadelphia Art Scene: Papermag.com

Check out a great article written in 2007 (but still applicable) about the Philadelphia Art Scene at Papermag.com (click here). Written by Alexis Swerdloff, with photos by Alexander Cumming, the article describes two New Yorkers looking for something different. And they found it! Their trip to the Sixth Borough (as Ms. Swerdloff writes)  "was to scope out the Philly art scene. Just far enough away from New York (a little under two hours) to escape its looming shadow, and close enough to absorb some of its overflow, the Philadelphia art scene is booming."

I just returned from an enjoyable and inspiring evening watching Jeanne Ruddy show off her dance troupe, JRD, at the Performance Garage.  The  informal showing consisted of  a sampling of  the Graham technique, as explained by Ms. Ruddy, in order to understand the duets that followed. Next came two 5 minute excerpts of finished works in preparation for JRD's trip to North Carolina for the ArtsMarket on November 6th and 7th. Overall a phenomenal night!

I encourage you to check out JRD whenever you have the chance. The art is spectacular, the dancers are amazing and the venue is delightful!

Amy S. Rosenberg of the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote a very interesting article about Felice Fisher, Curator of Asian Art (Philadelphia Museum of Art).  The article is worth a read from several angles including the fantastic exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art called Ike Taiga and Tokuyama Gyokuran: Japanese Masters of the Brush. 

Ms. Rosenberg writes "Poetry is a central part of the exhibit; Taiga, who died in 1776 at 53, and his wife, who died eight years later at 56, wrote their own poetry and also made extensive use of writings by the Chinese literati of the 10th century.

Their poetry and calligraphy are of particular interest to Fischer, who received her doctorate from Columbia in Japanese poetry, with particular interest in female poets, and only later moved into the art field. That poetry is collected and translated as part of the exhibit and the catalog."

Chalk It Up!: Chattanooga, TN

My dad asked me to post some information about Chalk It Up Chattanooga. It is an event that benefits Girl Scouts Art and Education programs, including at-risk youths and children with disabilities, in the Chattanooga, TN area.

The event is a day long art festival where artists young and old create art using chalk on the sidewalk. See masters of sidewalk chalk art such as Lee Jones create extraordinary images right in front of your eyes.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art will exhibit works by Ike Taiga (1723-1776) and his wife Tokuyama Gyokuran (1727-1784) from May 1, 2007 until July 22, 2007. These two Japanese Brush Masters were poets as well. As a painter, Taiga was extremely prolific and his inventiveness help create the Nanga Movement.
